Obsessively collected images found in thrift stores and flea markets are animated to create an alternate American aeronautical and cultural history. Through the gaps in these isolated moments of time, The Drift collages together a history of expansion and the desire to push too far, too fast. As the process of the character’s attempt to escape develops, captivating graphics begin to emerge the wall. These elements follow (and sometimes attack) the character. The conflict between the two and the environment literally grows out of control and leads us to the resolution. Originally created as a poem by the director, it was turned into a short animated film created in the UCLA Animation Workshop. Days are filled with home-cooked meals, board game-playing and bedtime stories. But all that changes when dad brings home a new appliance. Slowly the family is drawn away from their regular activities by the new device. Meals are no longer cooked but bought--prepackaged and frozen. Board games are forsaken for watching other people enjoy themselves. And bedtime stories are replaced by midnight commentary. It is up to young Suzie, the only unaffected member of her family, to save her parents and brother form the clutches of Television!
